At the age of one month, a human being measures four millimeters and a half.  Its tiny heart is already beating from one week onwards, its arms, its legs, its head, its brain are already sketched out. he measures some three centimetres from his head to the tip of his buttocks.  Folded up he would fit inside a nutshell.

But the brain, someone will say, is only going to be completed in five or six months time.  But no, it will be entirely complete at birth;  but its innumerable links will be forged only at six or seven years old and its chemical and electrical machinery will be fully established at fourteen or fifteen !

The period as embryo is finally ended two months after its having been fertilized.  At this point the little one is as big as my thumb.  And that is why all mothers tell fairy tales to their children about Tom Thumb, for that one is a true story.

Every one of us was once Tom Thumb inside his mother and women have already known that there is a sort of underground country;  a sort of vaulted shelter with a reddish light and a rhythmic sound in which small human beings lead a strange and microscopic life.  And that is the real story of Tom Thumb.

 

Incredible Facts about Servant of God Professor Jerome Lejeune, Author of ‘Tom Thumb’                                                                                                                                        Jerome Jean Louis Marie Lejeune, geneticist:  born Montrouge, France 13 June 1926;  Director or Research, CNRS 1963-94; author of  ‘Discovery of the Extra Chromosome in Trisomy 21’ (mongolisim) 1959, married Birthe Bringsted (two sons, three daughters);  died Paris 3 April 1994.  His list of research and writings cover two 8×11 pages.

A pivotal figure in medical genetics, Prof. Lejeune is best remembered for his discovery 35 years ago of the chromosome abnormality which causes Down’s Syndrome.

Cardinal Fiorenzo Angelini, First President of the dicastery of Pastoral Care of  Health Care Workers opened the cause for Beatification of Professor LeJeune. ?1996

Once, In a sermon, given in St. Peters Basillica, in 1992, Cardinal Angelini stated that his career (as a priest) had suffered because of his positive views on Pope Pius XII.

This appears to be another tale of  Vatican secretive intricacies.

Why?

News of Chromosome 21 being doubled, and, thus being the cause of Downs Syndrome, is buried.  It should not be.  It ‘blows one away’

The Positio for sainthood of Professor Lejeune was delivered to the Congrazione delle Cause Dei Sainti, in Vatican, on May 5, 2007.  It was a culmination of ten years of combined efforts, in Paris and Rome.
