Relatively speaking, Jaguar is a somewhat obscure luxury automaker, having significantly less market share than its German rivals at BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi.

For that reason, you may be unaware of where Jaguar originates and where it builds its cars today.

In this post, we will provide a brief history of Jaguar and also list every factory the company currently operates. This list will focus on where Jaguar builds its cars destined for the North American market, as it operates some factories that service certain markets only, like those in China.

The company that we know as Jaguar today started life as the Swallow Sidecar Company, which was started by two motorcycle enthusiasts, William Lyons and William Walmsley, in Blackpool, England, in 1922. Walmsley eventually pulled out of the venture, forcing Lyons to seek additional investment as he reinvented the company as S.S. Cars Limited.

S.S. Cars released its first model, the Jaguar 100, in 1935. By 1945, the company had elected to change its company name to Jaguar, rather than continue to use it as a model name, with Lyons saying the Jaguar name was more distinctive and British-sounding than S.S. Cars. The first model released under the newly rebranded Jaguar moniker as the XK120 – a now iconic vehicle that stands as an important piece of motoring history.

Today, Jaguar is owned by Jaguar Land Rover, which is a subsidiary of Indian automotive giant Tata. Its headquarters are located in Coventry, UK.
