If the yoke was holding you back, then well, Tesla now has options.

When the Tesla Model S and Model X were facelifted, exterior changes were minimal, but the interiors of the two cars had a fairly thorough overhaul. The overhaul included improved materials and a reworking of the car’s infotainment screen, but more controversially, two cars replaced their normal steering wheels with an aircraft-style yoke design. The yoke has drawn ire and praise alike from Tesla die-hards, some praising the brand for taking chances. Others have derided the yoke’s implementation, insisting that it causes drivability and control issues, especially when driving fast.

Well, some of those critiques can be rectified; Tesla now offers a round wheel for the Model S and Model X. In fact, the Model S and X now come standard with the round wheel. The yoke is a no-cost, selectable option.

Still, if you’re the current owner of a Model S or X equipped with the yoke, never fear, Tesla is there. For $700, or $960 CAD, (including labor at an approved Tesla service center) the yoke can be replaced with a traditional round wheel.

For many, the yoke is only part of the problem. With the facelift, the Model S and Model X lost their gear selector and turn signal stalks, replacing them with touch-based controls on the infotainment screen and steering wheel, respectively. The round wheel retrofit won’t add the stalks back. The steering wheel is heated, however.

The upgrade won’t be available until March 2023.
