Tesla and Honda Top List Of Most American Made Cars

If you thought a Chevy, Ford, or RAM pickup truck would be the most American-made vehicle, well, think again. The most American-made vehicles are probably going to be completely electric, or made by Honda.

In a recently released analysis from Cars.com, the Tesla Model Y and Tesla Model 3 have taken top honors of being the most American-made vehicles on sale today. Curiously, many of the “big three” are shockingly absent from the top ten. Sure, the Lincoln Corsair is number three, but the big trucks like the Chevy Silverado, Ford F-150, or RAM 1500 are absent from the list. Tesla and Honda tie for the most spots on Cars.com’s list.

To generate the list, Cars.com analyzed five different things; Location of final assembly, Percentage of U.S. and Canadian parts, Country of origin for available engines, Country of origin for available transmissions, and U.S. manufacturing employees relative to the automaker’s footprint. Although Tesla and Honda have dominated this year’s list, Cars.com says that Lincoln Corsair placed so high because of its dramatic 50% increase of U.S. and Canadian-made parts. Similarly, Tesla’s new Texas plant became operational, which helped place the Model Y so high on the list. Stunningly, the Honda Passport has 75% of U.S.-made content.

The method in which Cars.com weighted the criteria and calculated the score is confidential, but it does reduce scoring from vehicles that have multiple manufacturing facilities, with certain models imported. For example, the Toyota Corolla sedan is made in Alabama, but the hatchback is imported from Japan, lowering its American-made score.

Keep an eye on that window sticker, because your “American” car might not be all that American.
