Subaru To Unveil Enthusiast-Focused WRX TR On October 7
Subaru’s hot new WRX is coming very soon.
The Subaru WRX is a lovely car, but some have accused it of being a little too soft compared to years past. Only the very base model is available with a six-speed manual. The more sport-oriented trims come with a CVT, dubbed “SPT” by Subaru’s engineering and marketing team. Enthusiasts are really hurting for a harder WRX, especially since the STI is now dead entirely.
Well, that dream may come true. Subaru announced that it will unveil the Subaru WRX TR on October 7, at Subiefest Florida. It’ll be a star-studded event, including folks like Travis Pastrana, and skateboarder/rallycross driver Bucky Lasek. Subiefest itself is a huge gathering of Subaru drivers and owners, where they can push their cars on autocross tracks and learn the limits of their vehicles.
Subaru’s given us no details about what the WRX TR will be, just that it will be “sharper and more enthusiast-focused.” That could mean anything, but we think it could take the form of more power and sharper responses, just like the Prodrive-tuned current generation WRX. Prodrive’s example was just a prototype, the firm’s improvements went a long way to sharpening up the standard WRX. We hope that Subaru will take a page from Prodrive’s book, and import those changes for the WRX TR, but we won’t know until the car is unveiled.
Hopefully, it won’t solely be available with Subaru’s CVT transmission. As good as it is, it’s just not the same as a row-your-own six-speed manual.
