Straight Six to Replace V8s in Future Jaguar Land Rover Models

Jaguar Land Rover will eventually phase out V8 engines in favor of high-performance versions of the upcoming Ingenium inline-six engine.

According to Autocar, the new Ingenium straight-six will feature an electrically powered turbocharger, giving it enough power to properly replace the aging 5.0-liter V8 in future Land Rover and Jaguar products. Less powerful versions of the engine will also replace the automaker’s 3.0-liter V6 going forward.

The straight-six engine is apart of a new lineup of Ingenium engines from JLR that will also include a three-cylinder and a four-cylinder. Clean diesels are also included in the new engine lineup, although they are likely for Europe only and probably won’t arrive in North America.

The first vehicle expected to arrive with these new engines is the next-generation Evoque. The crossover will ride on a heavily modified version of the current front-wheel drive based platform called ‘Premium Transverse Architecture’. Autocar alleges the new Evoque will debut in Los Angeles in November before going on sale in the beginning of 2019. The next-generation Discovery Sport will also move to the PTA platform when it’s replaced in 2020 or 2021.

Eventually, all JLR models will move to a modular aluminum-intensive platform called the ‘Modular Longitudinal Architecture’. The flexible platform will accommodate both rear- and all-wheel drive layouts, along with gasoline, diesel, plug-in hybrid and electric powertrains. The first MLA-based model to arrive will be the next-generation Defender – expected to enter production in 2020. Shortly after, the MLA-based Jaguar J-Pace large SUV will debut, followed by the next-generation Range Rover in 2021. The rumored wagon-crossover combo, internally referred to as the ‘Road Rover’ EV, will arrive on MLA sometime after 2022.

Eventually the E-Pace, Evoque and Discovery Sport will move to MLA as well – although this isn’t expected to happen until 2025 or later.

This new product strategy will see JLR replace every single one of its current models with all-new ones by 2024. All told, 99 new model variants will be launched between now and then.
