Smart is recalling its Fortwo subcompact for a possible steering bolt issue.

Parent company Mercedes-Benz has announced that 5,058 Smart Fortwos in the U.S. are being recalled for bolts that could loosen the steering over time. Affected models include the 2014-2015 Smart Fortwo coupe and convertible, as well as the 2014 Fortwo Electric coupe and convertible. According to the recall filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, certain bolts that attach the steering gear to the front cross member may have been manufactured improperly and could break apart over time.

If that was to occur, the steering wheel could possibly tilt and the stability control warning light will flash. The German automaker began investigating the issue after receiving complaints outside the U.S. and found broken bolts on the cross member. No injuries or accidents related to the issue have been reported.

Affected vehicles will have their steering-gear mounting bolts replaced by Smart dealerships.

Speaking of your smart forum; Hi Jason Siu and the rest of Autoguide, did you know traffic at smartcarofamerica has dropped precipitously since last month when they closed the highly popular thread about Elio Motors? It was the single-highest view generating thread of the entire site for over a year, with almost 75,000 views total since it started a few months ago in 2013! -Very very inept moderator staff who only know how to close threads instead of addressing any issues precisely. None of my business; but it is horrible for Autoguide's exposure :(
