Rivian's First DC Fast Charger Opens For Business In Colorado

Following in the footsteps of brands like Tesla, Rivian’s self-developed charging network went online today, with the first charging station opening in Salida, Colorado.

Rivian, the electric pickup truck, and SUV maker has one product on sale, the large electric truck, called the R1T. It, and its newly previewed SUV sister model, are expensive, powerful vehicles, arguably marketed towards outdoorsy folks who live a more rugged lifestyle. Thus, Rivian’s Adventure chargers are designed to cater to that clientele. Rivian insists that one should be able to bring their EV to the great outdoors.

Rivian’s first charging station opened up on June 27, in Salida, Colorado. Salida, a tourist-friendly town known for mountain biking, now has a DC fast charging station with four chargers, including a pull-through one that can accommodate a truck pulling a trailer. The next two stations are to open on June 28 and 29, at Inyokern, California, and Bishop, California. Rivian has plans to open more charging stations in natural, outdoorsy tourist locations, like Death Valley, Yosemite National Park, Sequoia National Forest, and more.

Unlike a Tesla-branded Supercharger, Rivian’s Adventure chargers are open to all makes and models of EVs\. Rivian aims to have all of the chargers powered by renewable energy. “We designed Rivian charging to support electrified adventure, and these first sites demonstrate how we’re enabling drivers to responsibly reach some of the nation’s most breathtaking natural spaces,” said Trent Warnke, Rivian’s Senior Director of Energy and Charging Solutions.

Rivian aims to establish 3,500 fast chargers, at more than 600 sites in North America.
