A Pure Electric Maserati Sports Car is on the Way
The long-awaited Maserati Alfieri sports car will spawn a pure electric variant after its eventual debut, Fiat Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne has revealed.
Speaking to Autocar, Marchionne said an all-electric sports car will arrive based on the Alfieri Concept, which was first shown at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show. The EV will likely arrive in 2020, while a standard gas version of the two-seater should arrive before decade’s end.
The planned EV sports car is representative of a new found push from Maserati to use more electrified powertrains in its cars. Marchionne said every new Maserati from 2019 onward will feature a hybrid powertrain, and some of its current models will also be hybridized. The first hybrid vehicle from the Trident brand will likely be a plug-in version of the Levante SUV. It seems likely the Quattroporte sedan could also adopt a hybrid system at some point.

The hybrid powertrain to be used in the Levante will be a modified version of the Chrysler Pacific Hybrid’s 16 kWh system. Maserati CEO Harald Wester has said previously that developing an all-new electric propulsion system would be too expensive, so they must turn to FCA for help. It seems likely the Pacifica Hybrid’s powertrain would be modified for greater output and range in Maserati applications, however.
