A big range boost is coming to the next generation of the MINI Cooper SE.

The MINI Cooper SE may be a charming take on the MINI Cooper hatchback, but its appeal has been somewhat limited. Cute, fun-to-drive, and electric, the premium hatchback’s biggest limiting factor has been its lack of range. At an EPA-rated 114 miles of range, that’s just not very competitive against most other EVs in the price range that is capable of well over 200 miles.

But, it looks like MINI has seen that complaint because the next MINI Cooper SE will have way more range. According to reporting from Autocar, the next iteration of the fully-electric MINI will touch 240 miles in Europe, up from its current 150-mile European rating. In theory, this should translate to roughly 200 miles of range in the US and Canada.

Underneath, the next MINI Cooper electric will use a new platform developed jointly between BMW and Great Wall Motors (GWM). Autocar reports that the resulting vehicle is about the same size as the current MINI Cooper, albeit with shorter front overhangs. The final car will come with either a 40 kWh battery, or an optional 54 kWh battery upgrade. Both are substantial upgrades over the current 32.6 kWh battery in the current MINI Cooper SE. Interestingly enough, there won’t be a 5-door MINI Cooper SE. Instead, the brand will allow the f orthcoming EV-only Aceman to serve as the five-door EV entry.

MINI wants the EV version to account for half of MINI Cooper sales by 2025. The next generation MINI Cooper will officially launch in the summer of 2024.
