New Lincoln Aviator Concept Previews V6 Hybrid SUV
The new Lincoln Aviator Concept has been presented in New York City this week, previewing a production version that will go on sale next year.
For this new Aviator, the SUV is back on a rear-wheel-drive platform. Ford says the new global architecture “serves to enhance Aviator’s elegant proportions, with a long wheelbase allowing for a spacious second and third row.” It will feature a twin-turbocharged V6 engine paired with what Lincoln is calling its first plug-in hybrid vehicle tech. Ford didn’t provide any other details on the powertrain, so we’ll probably have to wait until the production version of the Aviator debuts to learn full engine statistics.

Customers will access the Aviator with a Lincoln smartphone app. Once inside, they will be greeted by Lincoln’s “Perfect Position” 30-way adjustable seats with massage function up front. The flexible second row can also recline and move forward or backward for increased comfort for third-row passengers. Other standout features include a center-mounted infotainment screen, a 12-inch digital cluster display, onboard Wi-Fi and a wireless charging pad in the center armrest. The concept is also presented in a Black Label-inspired trim level, which includes the aluminum trim and Shearling Beige and Lunar Gray leather.
Production Aviators will be offered with a variety of active safety tech, including automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind spot information system with cross-traffic alert, lane keeping system, reverse camera and auto high-beam lighting. There’s also a neat new system called Suspension Preview Technology, which “seamlessly adjusts the suspension for upcoming road conditions.” For example, if the vehicle detects a pothole, it will soften the suspension.
The Lincoln Aviator Concept is being presented at the 2018 New York International Auto Show from March 30th through to April 8th. The production version may debut later this year or in early 2019, before going on sale in mid-to-late 2019.
