Mercedes-Benz might be the next automaker to enter the ultra-luxury SUV segment, possibly with its Maybach sub-brand.

Now that the Bentley Bentayga officially made its debut, Mercedes acknowledges that it is keeping an eye on the segment and believes the ultra-luxury SUV market is a natural fit for the brand. Although the German automaker currently has no timetable to make a decision, Andreas Zygan, Mercedes director of development for SUVs, said “We are looking at everything that is going on with that segment.”

Mercedes is expanding its crossover and SUV lineup starting with the GLC- and GLE-Class models and recently confirmed the GLC Coupe will be heading to production. The company also recently announced that G-Class sales are up 20 percent over last year, when it set a record for units delivered. In total, the company’s crossover and SUV sales are up 25 percent.

It would make sense for Mercedes to leverage the revival of its Maybach nameplate with an ultra-luxury SUV offering, especially since other automakers including Lamborghini are also entering the segment that is currently ruled by the Bentley Bentayga.
