Mercedes-Maybach Reveals Outrageous Electric Ultra-Luxury Coupe With Gullwings

Mercedes unveiled a new ultra luxurious coupe concept at 2016 Monterey Car Week, one of the world’s most prestigious motoring events.

The Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 is a 2+2 coupe, and the concept’s most defining feature is probably its enormous size. The concept measures 18.5 feet long (a bit short of the 20 feet that was promised earlier), nearly 7 feet wide, and is designed as an electric car.

Boasting an impressive and probably impossible 738 horsepower and more than 200 miles of range, the concept is powered by four compact synchronous electric motors, one at each wheel, meaning the coupe is all-wheel drive. The shallow underfloor battery has an 80kWh capacity and allows for a zero-to-62 mph acceleration time of under four seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph. Mercedes says this electric drive system is in development for production cars.

The concept also has a quick charging feature that can get an extra 62 miles of range in just five minutes. The system allows a charging capacity of 350 kW and can be charged wirelessly or by plugging it in to a conventional charging station or outlet.

The 6 has classic sports coupe proportions with an exaggerated long hood, short deck and low roofline. In a retro throwback to classic Benzes, gullwing doors make a bold statement about the brand’s history and prestige. Mercedes also says the design is “aerodynamically intelligent,” even without the use of spoilers.

A few other interesting design cues are the massive red and partially transparent 24-inch rims, the large upright grille, narrow lights, split rear window and boat tail rear end. The concept also has no side mirrors — cameras located on the fenders will relay information to the driver.

Inside, the concept is ultra futuristic, with the entire windshield acting as a head-up/augmented reality display controlled by gestures and a large glass strip that spans the whole dashboard seeing duty as another digital display screen. The floating central tunnel is also transparent and visualizes the car’s energy flow. Rose gold accents are used throughout and open pore elm is used in the floor area, something Mercedes says could be used soon in production cars. The concept also comes with a set of suitcases housed in the front luggage area.

The seats are upholstered in leather and the buttons are actually body sensors that monitor a driver’s vital functions. The concept can be driven like a traditional car, but it also has an autonomous mode.
