Mercedes-Benz Reportedly Cutting Coupes, Wagons and AMG GT 4-door In The Near Future

The era of Mercedes-Benz filling every niche may be soon coming to an end.

Mercdes-Benz arguably started a new segment, the four-door coupe with the introduction of the CLS-class in the mid-2000s. Then, it didn’t stop creating new market segments, by coupe-izing nearly every sedan and SUV model it had. But, according to a report from Car and Driver, a lot of these models are facing a big chop. Mercedes-Benz wants to boost volume, profit and marketshare, and somehow push the brand even further upmarket. And to Mercedes-Benz, coupes, wagons, and convertibles aren’t part of that plan. Out of the 33 body styles in production from Mercedes-Benz, only 14 are expected to survive.

The SLC, S-class coupe, and cabriolet are already gone, but the segment-defining CLS-class is also on its way out. The C and E coupe (and convertible) will be merged into one model that splits the difference, and the AMG GT four-door is also slated for cancellation soon. Mercedes’s new modular small car architecture will cut the global number of smaller cars it makes from seven down to four. Reportedly, the GLE and GLC coupe versions will die after their next generations. All of its wagon models may die completely by 2030.

Instead, the brand will push upward, focusing on subscription services, AMG models, and expanding its Maybach line of vehicles. Is that smart? We’ll see, Car and Driver talked to sources within Mercedes-Benz that claimed that low-volume body styles or cars only designed to work well in Europe, are not part of the brand’s future. It looks like the future of Mercedes-Benz will end up being a sedan, crossover, and maybe one lone roadster offering.
