McLaren has marked the opening of its new Composites Technology Center in Sheffield, UK in a very special way.

The British automaker held ab event for special guests at the composites center last night, where it rolled out its new Senna road car and did some donuts for the crowd. The event was intended to celebrate the near completion of the facility, which will serve as McLaren’s second production site and its first-ever outside of Woking. The new factory will also allow McLaren to continue the advancement of its carbon fiber Monocage chassis and will speed up its production processes.

In a press release, McLaren announced it will ramp-up the development of its hybrid tech in coming years as well – a major part of its current business strategy.

“McLaren is continuing to develop its expertise in both hybrid –it delivered the world’s first hybrid hypercar the P1 over five years ago – and lightweight materials,” the company said in a statement. “Combined, the two are fundamental in the development of future automotive technologies, capable of driving increased performance while meeting ever stricter environmental legislation. Under the company’s ambitious Track22 business plan, at least half of the brand’s range will feature hybrid technology by 2022.”

McLaren’s new tech center is set to open later this year. About 200 people will work there, the automaker says, joining the 40 McLaren workers already in Sheffield working at its Advanced Manufacturing Research Center. The site is the result of a £50million investment by McLaren, nearly $70 million USD.
