This is What the McLaren 720S Spider Will Look Like
Patent drawings for the forthcoming McLaren 720S Spider have revealed what the drop-top supercar will look like ahead of its debut.
These patent images were dug up by Dutch automotive site AutoVisie and give us an early glimpse at the 720S Spider and its retracting hardtop roof. The illustrations show how the roof will sit when it is up, along with how the vehicle will look when the roof is retracted. We’re surprised by just how much of the roof retracts – everything from the A-pillars backward appears to fold away into the supercar’s rear end. The convertible opening is also much larger than that of the vehicle’s predecessor, the 650S Spider.

Apart from the retracting hardtop roof, we’re not expecting the 720S Spider to differ too much from the hardtop. McLaren’s Monocage II carbon fiber chassis should be rigid enough where it won’t have to add any chassis reinforcements, although the folding hardtop and its related mechanical parts will probably add a bit of weight to the Spider. The same 710 hp 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 should be on the cards, along with the seven-speed dual clutch transmission. Performance will likely be similar to the coupe as well, which can sprint from 0-60 mph in 3.0s and top out at 212 mph.
The McLaren 720S Spider is expected to make its debut sometime in 2019, so stay tuned for more information on this new supercar in the coming months.
