maybach is making a new super luxury suv

The next-generation Mercedes-Benz GLS will spawn an ultra-luxurious Maybach variant.

Word on the Maybach SUV comes from Autocar, which reports a concept version will debut in April at the 2018 Beijing Motor Show. The concept will heavily inspire the production version, which is slated to go on sale sometime in 2019. It will reportedly compete with other high-priced luxury utilities like the Bentley Bentayga, Range Rover SV Autobiography and the upcoming Rolls-Royce Cullinan.

The next-generation Mercedes-Benz GLS will ride on Mercedes’ new Modular High Architecture platform, which is an improved version of the MRA platform found in a number of rear-wheel drive-based Mercedes products. The Maybach will be set apart by subtle exterior styling tweaks, such as a Maybach-specific grille, while the interior will be much more luxurious than the standard car. There will also be a number of semi-autonomous driving features.

Under the hood will be Mercedes’ 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine, which makes well over 500 horsepower in some applications. Mercedes’ 48V starter-alternator, a system it hopes to eventually integrate into every vehicle it sells, will join the eight-cylinder engine in the luxury SUV.

AutoGuide.com will have full details on the new Mercedes-Maybach GLS following its expected debut next month.
