Is Maserati going electric? New documents we’ve uncovered seem to suggest just that.

A law firm associated with Maserati has submitted several trademarks for an unnamed company, indicating the Italian automaker is looking to electrify their lineup. Trademark registrations make no mention of the company name, but the names filed leave little to the imagination.

The names registered were:

  • Ghibli EV
  • Levante EV
  • Quattroporte EV
  • Maserati EV

Notably absent is the brand’s grand touring sports car, the GranTurismo, suggesting that nameplate either won’t transition to the EV strategy or that it could be slated for retirement. The GranTurismo model has been on sale since 2007.

It has previously been reported that the GranTurismo would be replaced by the Alfieri concept. Debuting back in 2014, when it does arrive as early as next year, it’s expected to lead Maserati’s electric vehicle charge with a full-electric powertrain capable of hitting 60 mph in just two seconds!

If Maserati is going electric, they will join a growing number of companies already doing so. Ford, GM, Porsche, and Jaguar are just a few of the companies with electric vehicles available or coming. An electric Maserati Quattroporte or Levante could improve interest in the brand and add to the competitors stacking up against Tesla.
