In the battle of the 2022 Porsche Macan GTS vs 2022 BMW X3 M, neither car is a fuel-sipper. There’s 937 horsepower between them. Miles per gallon? Pfft, we’re focusing on smiles per gallon here.

These are the sorts of vehicles we’re not supposed to like. Crossovers can never be sports cars, some will say. And these aren’t—but they sure get close. Not just in how they surge from A to B, but in how they can deconstruct a road in a way that pastes a grin onto your face. The Macan and X3 are overachieving all-rounders. If the question is what vehicle can do it all, well, here are two credible answers.

It’s common practice in this industry to have journalists drive top trims, or nearly so.

It makes sense: manufacturers spend untold millions on development of each new model, and a top trim represents everything that went into that. But those range-toppers usually aren’t what most car buyers end up driving off dealer lots. More often than not, it’s the base engines, like this 2022 Porsche Macan.

The trickle-down philosophy isn’t all bad. Exhibit A: the 2022 Porsche Macan S.

The sweet orange Porsche Macan you see here has inherited the stronger 2.9-liter V6 engine from last year’s GTS model. That goes hand-in-hand with the overall freshening up the whole model range has seen for 2022.

These changes aren’t transformative, but then again, they don’t have to be. The Macan is the brand’s best-selling model in North America, and one of the sweetest-driving SUVs out there. The changes for 2022 keep it competitive in a very crowded segment, and the Macan S in particular represents something of a sweet spot in the lineup.

This is the Genesis GV70’s sternest test yet.

The Korean luxury brand’s newest (and smallest) SUV is an impressive one. The 2022 Genesis GV70 arrived this summer and immediately made an impact, leapfrogging the Japanese competition and aligning with the Germans. Its blend of unique interior design, strong tech suite, and powerful V6 engine is an enticing one. Genesis has imbued the GV70 with solid driving dynamics, too, making it genuinely fun for spirited driving.

Driving enjoyment is something the Porsche Macan has had on lock since it arrived on the scene. It remains the yardstick for the segment, so we had to stick these two together as soon as the opportunity presented itself. Just how good is the GV70 as an overall package?
