2023 BMW M4 CSL First Drive Review
The hardest running event in track and field was never the longest. It was the 400 meter race.
At a much earlier, thinner, healthier time in my life, I faced this race for the first time. Should I sprint early or save my energy for the back half? “Yes” was my coach’s answer, effectively: he wanted me sprinting everywhere. There’s no time to relax. No time to catch your breath. Keep focused, push yourself well past your comfort zone, and bask in the post-event afterglow. You’ve got nothing else to do while you regain feeling in your legs, anyway.
The 2023 BMW M4 CSL is the 400m race. It is on, fully and completely, 100 percent of the time. It isn’t for everyone, both because of its rarity (BMW will produce just 1,000 for global consumption), and its extreme nature. This hardcore coupe is specialized, demanding more of its driver, but on a track, the CSL capable of delivering highs previously inaccessible in the G82/G83 generation of M4.
2022 BMW M4 Competition xDrive First Drive Review: This Drive is Secure
The 2022 BMW M4 Competition Convertible xDrive should appeal to a lot of people.
The regular M4 Competition is a quick and capable sports coupe, one we enjoyed aplenty last summer. And we liked the M440i Convertible just a month later, a grand tourer with just the right amount of edge.
Both of those rides were true-blue rear-drive models. Now the M4 comes with BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system, promising even quicker acceleration and an added dash of all-weather drivability. What that means for the M4 Convertible is its confirmation as a card-carrying member of the grand tourer club.
BMW staggered the rollout of the different M3 and M4 variants, saving the xDrive models for 2022, to debut alongside the drop-top version of the latter. If you’re gunning for the xDrive, then be prepared to level up to the Competition trim, which unlocks the full-power version of BMW’s delightful turbocharged inline-six. That’s a chunky 503 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque, hitting all four contact patches via the excellent ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic. Sorry, three-pedal fans: if you want a traditional shifter, you’ll need to stick to the basic 473-hp, 406-lb-ft, rear-drive M4. Or the four-door M3.
2021 BMW M4 Competition Review: Smells Like Success
You don’t put much thought into the 2021 BMW M4’s divisive, elongated kidney grille schnoz from the driver’s seat.
Oh, the mind does focus on the front-end of this mean, black Bimmer as it deconstructs a series of corners—but not on the looks. “This steering feels real good” is an early leader, with “dang, turn in is sharp,” and “will these P-Zeroes ever give up?” not far behind. Then thoughts turn inward, as you quickly realize you’re now wearing your own toothy grin—one almost as big as the M4’s.
A week with the car made it all clear. This latest member of the BMW M family is a blast to drive, an indulgent sports coupe that just wants you to have all the fun, all the time.
