The best-selling PHEV in the US is actually the Jeep Wrangler.

The Jeep Wrangler 4xE PHEV had a really good Q3, alongside the whole Jeep Wrangler lineup. For Q3, the Wrangler’s total sales output rose 4% compared to last year. Most pertinently, Jeep moved more than 13,000 PHEV Jeep Wranglers this past Q3. That blows out the next nearest best-selling PHEV – the Toyota RAV4 Prime. The Wrangler 4xe accounted for a whopping 28% of sales for the entire Jeep Wrangler lineup.

Underneath, the Jeep Wrangler 4xE uses a similar 2.0 turbocharged engine to other Jeep wranglers, but an electric motor fed by a 14.4-kilowatt-hour battery can drive the rear wheels alone without any gas assistance for a range of 21 all-electric miles. In tandem, when the battery is fully charged, the system has an output of 375 horsepower. Combining strong performance, a decent EV-only range, and a hefty $7,500 tax credit, it’s no wonder that the Wrangler 4xe is so popular. A new base Willys 4xe was recently released, starting at $55,590. After the tax credit, the cheapest PHEV Wrangler would be $48,090; not bad for a go-anywhere SUV that can also be plugged in.

The Jeep Wrangler 4xe’s strong sales seem like a great litmus test for future Stellantis electrification efforts. In the near future, Jeep plans future 4xe models. For example, the Grand Cherokee 4xe will soon go on sale, and the fully electric Jeep Wagoneer S will only further get the brand into the new electric age.
