AutoGuide revealed that Jaguar had trademarked the C-Pace name yesterday, and now we’ve uncovered another Jaguar trademark: J-Type.

Just like C-Pace, the Jaguar J-Type name was reserved under multiple classifications with the European Intellectual Property Office including those for autonomous vehicles, software, automobiles and repairs and servicing. It’s likely that the J-Type is going to be a new car, however, and not an autonomous vehicle software or something of that sort.

Jaguar typically uses the ‘Type’ suffix on sports cars: the E-Type and the F-Type, to be specific. That means the J-Type, if it ever surfaces, will probably be a new sports car of some sort – potentially a replacement for the F-Type. In a 2016 interview with Road & Track, Jaguar design director Ian Callum said Jag was open to the F-Type replacement being mid-engine.

“I think we’ve got more permission to break the mold,” Callum told R&T. “Our F-Type, before the one that became the production car, the previous design concept was mid-engine. It never happened. It would have been very different. But I think we’ve got permission to do that, because we’re a sports car company.”

“We’ve had a discussion—will the next F-Type be mid-engine or front-engine? We’ve had that discussion. We haven’t decided yet,” he added.

We’re endlessly curious as to what the J-Type name could be used on and will bring you more information as soon as we have it. At the moment, it does seem as though Jag is at least toying with the idea of introducing another sports car.

The mid-engine supercar market is all but glutted. Wouldn't it make more sense to go after Mazda Miata sized sports car market? A more dashing 2 seater modern design with more power and some British panache. Sure would sell more of them than a C-8, etc., competitor.
