Although Hyundai’s high-performance N division isn’t all that old, today it enters a new chapter – electrification. With the 2025 Ioniq 5 N, the brand’s hopes are “for performance enthusiasts to satisfy their driving passion on the road and track.”, just with an EV instead. Hyundai is quick to point out the new vehicle needs to achieve the three N performance pillars of ‘Corner Rascal,’ ‘Racetrack Capability’ and ‘Everyday Sportscar’.

In this brave new world of electrification, we’ve become accustomed to ridiculously powerful EVs. Manufacturers like Telsa, Lucid, and Lotus all have vehicles for sale that make over 1,000 hp. The first EV from the performance sub-brand, the Ioniq 5 N packs in plenty of unique features over other E-GMP models, including but not limited to more power, more battery capacity, and a bevy of performance-minded driver assists to wring out every bit of the car's increased capabilities.

This is the coolest looking car to come out in years.

There’s a lot of reasons to like the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5. The Korean brand’s first from-the-ground-up dedicated EV is roomy, reasonably affordable, and rides well. It is, by all the typical metrics, a very good car. The market has a lot of good cars.

But those looks make the Ioniq 5 a much rarer thing: desirable. The EV revolution is fast approaching, and Hyundai is staking its future on this high-style pseudo-crossover, one that puts the “U” in SUV with clever charging solutions. Doing all this at a price folks can afford is a big power play, and based on a first drive in San Diego, Hyundai should have a hit on its hands.

Don’t fight, kids.

This was bound to happen. The 2022 Kia EV6 and Hyundai Ioniq 5 share the same genes. These two all-wheel drive, all-electric models ride on an identical platform, carrying the same size battery packs. We drove the Kia EV6 last week and adored it; around the same time, we crowned the Ioniq 5 our 2022 Green Vehicle of the Year. Safe to say we love them both.

But just like two siblings, they’re both special in their own ways. In fact, we were sure they had complementing strengths, strengths that contrasted with the others’ weakness.
