Hyundai is planning some upgrades to make its EVs even more efficient, courtesy of new tech from STMicroelectronics.

Underpinning the generally very good triplet of EVs, the Kia EV6, Genesis GV60, and Hyundai Ioniq 5, lies the Hyundai E-GMP platform. Stylish, efficient, and reasonably priced; Hyundai wants to make some hardware upgrades that will make them even more competitive in the market.

Hyundai will use a brand-new Sillicon-Carbide power module from STMicroelectronics that should improve efficiency from the original silicon power module. This new Sillicon-Carbide module can handle up to 1200V, and is liquid-cooled, allowing for faster charge times.

This new Sllicon-Carbide power unit isn’t just for Hyundai. STMicroelectronics has introduced five new variants using the same technology, at features and price points suitable for multiple manufacturers. The 1200V variants are already in production, but the company has plans for 750V units to enter production soon.

InsideEVs noticed that although e-GMP has an 800V architecture, the front motor on AWD dual-motor variants actually uses a 400V setup. Swapping the power module to one capable of 800V could yield up to 5% more range, and faster charging times, since the extra voltage won’t have to convert 800V to 400V, among one of many reasons.

Hyundai hasn’t exactly said when these upgrades will go into effect, or if the upgrade will have any tangible real-world benefit, just yet. STMicroelectronics has confirmed that its new modules have been selected by Hyundai, but we don’t expect any range or charging updates until a model facelift, likely coming somewhat soon.
