Ohio’s got yet another battery manufacturing plant coming its way.

Honda and LG Energy Solutions have announced plans for a battery manufacturing plant. Located somewhere in Fayette Country, Ohio, this new plant will manufacture batteries for forthcoming Honda/Acura branded EVs. Notably, it’s about 40 miles southwest of Columbus, and a stone’s throw from Honda’s North American headquarters, in Marysville, Ohio.

Pending final regulatory approval from the state of Ohio, the new plant will cost at least $3.5 billion, create 2,200 jobs, and is expected to reach around $4.4 billion of investments from the two companies when all is said and done. This dovetails into Honda’s plan to manufacture EVs in the US on its own dedicated EV platform by 2026.

This is LG Energy Solution’s second EV battery manufacturing plant in Ohio alone. In Northeast Ohio, near Lordstown, sits a joint venture plant between LG and GM that produces EV batteries for GM Ultium-based EVs. The Honda and LG partnership seems to be yet another part of LG’s plan to focus on North America, a market that it believes is one of the fastest-growing EV markets in the world.

Honda is excited to expand its operations in Ohio. “Honda is proud of our history in Ohio, where our U.S. manufacturing operations began more than four decades ago. Now, as we expand Honda’s partnership with Ohio, we are investing in a workforce that will create the power source for our future Honda and Acura electric vehicles,” said Bob Nelson, executive vice president of American Honda Motor Company.

The companies want to start production on the plant by early 2023 and finish by 2024. Batteries should start churning out of the plant sometime in 2025.
