Holy Crap – Fiat May Be Working on a 124 Abarth GT4 Race Car
A mysterious Fiat 124 Abarth GT based racecar was recently spotted being put through its paces at Monza in Italy – fueling rumors that the Italian automaker is working on a GT4 race program for the little two-seater.
The development mule spotted at Monza was sporting a white camouflage wrap, so this is likely a factory car being developed by Fiat and Abarth. The vehicle also had a wild aero kit that consists of a massive rear wing, a ducktail rear lip spoiler, a huge rear diffuser, tall side skirts, fender vents, a NACA-ducted hood, a deep front splitter and front canards. This being a race car, it was sporting a red tow hook, a roll cage, side exit exhausts and a relocated refueling cap as well.

Rumors point to this race-spec 124 being powered by the same 1.8-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine as the Fiat 124 Abarth R-GT rally car. Closely related to the Alfa Romeo 4C’s 1.75-liter powerplant, the 1.8-liter engine makes 300 hp in the rally car and could be making up to 400 hp in this so-called 124 Abarth GT4. The engine is sending power to the rear wheels – likely through a sequential racing gearbox of some sort.
It’s not clear what this 124 Abarth race car could be for, but we’re eager to find out. For now, you can watch it fly around the ultra-fast Monza circuit in the video embedded above.
