Pros

Stand-out exterior design, swanky interior, loads of useful tech

Cons

Thirsty gas engines, stiff ride, only okay rear-seat space

Bottom Line

Genesis proves it wasn't a one-hit wonder with its second SUV, the GV70. A relative luxury bargain, it's a super-stylish compact SUV that should be on everyone's short list.

2022 Genesis GV70 2.5T First Drive Review: Four to Love

genesis gv70 review specs pricing features videos and more

The Genesis GV70 is already one the best compact SUVs on the market in V6 form, but what about the base engine?

I called the six-cylinder 2022 GV70 3.5T “ super appealing” when I drove it in the summer. That was the top-level Sport Plus trim, however. I stand by that verdict, but even Genesis acknowledges that won’t be the volume seller for what will be its volume model. Will buyers feel short-changed if they opt for the smaller four-cylinder model?

A short drive in the 2.5T model confirmed there’s nothing to worry about. While the four-pot might be down on power versus the flagship model, it’s still packing plenty of poke. Not only that, it retains much of what makes the GV70 so appealing, just at a more accessible price point. This is the model that should really worry the competition.

Genesis GV70 vs BMW X3 Comparison: Compact Luxury Face-Off

genesis gv70 review specs pricing features videos and more

If there’s one car that’s clearly in the sights of the Genesis GV70, it’s the BMW X3.

BMW has made bank with its compact crossover. At the end of 2021, the X3 had extended its lead over the segment, selling 75,858 units in the US. The closest competitor, the Audi Q5, sold four-fifths that total. It’s not hard to see why the X3 does so well: it blends the brand’s sporty reputation with the shape the market demands, and at the right size. It also comes in a variety of flavors—we called the mid-level X3 M40i the “Goldilocks” of the range recently, and that same car is the one we’ve brought to face the newcomer today.

By comparison, the entire Genesis brand sold fewer units than BMW shifted X3s. But sales tripled over 2020, and a large part of that growth came from the brand’s GV70. It arrives in a red-hot segment free from the shackles of decades of brand history. Striking design inside and out, a laundry list of tech, and fuss-free pricing are just some of the reasons we said the GV70 “ deserves to be on your compact SUV shortlist.”

2022 Genesis GV70 Review: First Drive

genesis gv70 review specs pricing features videos and more

This is the most important vehicle launch in Genesis‘ short history.

Listen to Lawrence Hamilton, executive director at Genesis Canada, and it’s clear that’s not marketing hyperbole: it’s just math. The brand estimates the compact crossover segment will represent roughly half of the premium market by 2025. Not only that, this little number ought to pull off a similar feat for the brand’s sales, essentially doubling the yearly figures on its own. So yeah, it’s a big deal.

I spent a weekend with the latest member of the Genesis family to determine if it was up to this Herculean task. With the now-traditional blend of athleticism, attention to detail, long standard features list, and high value, the 2022 Genesis GV70 is a strong contender right out of the gate. Congratulations, compact crossover buyers: your decision has now become that much harder.

Genesis GV70 vs Porsche Macan Comparison

genesis gv70 review specs pricing features videos and more

This is the Genesis GV70’s sternest test yet.

The Korean luxury brand’s newest (and smallest) SUV is an impressive one. The 2022 Genesis GV70 arrived this summer and immediately made an impact, leapfrogging the Japanese competition and aligning with the Germans. Its blend of unique interior design, strong tech suite, and powerful V6 engine is an enticing one. Genesis has imbued the GV70 with solid driving dynamics, too, making it genuinely fun for spirited driving.

Driving enjoyment is something the Porsche Macan has had on lock since it arrived on the scene. It remains the yardstick for the segment, so we had to stick these two together as soon as the opportunity presented itself. Just how good is the GV70 as an overall package? We had a week to find out, with a 3.5T model taking on Porsche’s mid-level Macan S. Game on.
