The GLE is Mercedes-Benz’ mid-size SUV, formerly known as the ML Class in a previous life. A variety of engines are available starting with a 255 hp turbocharged 4-cylinder, crescendoing with a fire-breathing 603 hp turbo V8. The SUV can be had with two or three row seating configurations.
With so many options, it’s no surprise the GLE is one of the German manufacturers best-selling models. There’s even a swoopy coupe version if desired.

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 4MATIC Review: Quick Drive
A good portion of SUVs within Mercedes-Benz’ lineup are undergoing a refresh this year.
That includes the brand’s very popular mid-size GLE. All-new for the 2020 model year, the GLE doesn’t radically change for the 2024 model year, but there are updates to nearly every aspect of the vehicle.
Always a segment benchmark, do these updates keep the GLE near the front of the pack, or has the competition caught up? During the Midwest Automotive Media Association’s Spring Rally, we got the chance to take the refreshed 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 4MATIC for a quick test drive to find out for ourselves.
2021 Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Review: Mild-Mannered Mild-Hybrid
For as long as AMG models have existed, their engines have dominated their personalities.
AMGs are the hot rods of their class, all snarling, howl-at-the-moon aggression. The GLC 63 S is a muscle-bound monster of a compact crossover, with a literal sports car engine shoved underneath its hood. It’s impossible not to laugh when gunning it.
The 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 is a different proposition. There’s no angry V8 up front, but instead a smooth-revving 3.0-liter inline-six. This turbocharged six-pot also benefits from a mild-hybrid system, dubbed EQ Boost, which augments the gas powerplant with more power, yet also improves fuel economy. True to tradition, this high-tech drivetrain still dictates the overall attitude of this Affalterbach creation, turning the GLE 53 into a kinder, softer, and better-balanced SUV.
