Mazda CX-50 Meridian vs Subaru Forester Wilderness: Moderate Muddin’

When a television series grips the world’s attention as it explodes in popularity; there’s bound to be spin-offs.

The same is true in the automotive world. Segments that are red hot inevitably lead to smaller, niche sub-segments. Case in point – compact SUVs. Having become the defacto choice for family vehicles, manufacturers are clamouring to get more and more of the segment’s prosperous pie.

One strategy is to build speciality compact SUVs, like the two we’re featuring here. Designed to be more capable off-road focused models, both the 2023 Mazda CX-50 Meridian and 2023 Subaru Forester Wilderness aren’t afraid to get a bit dirty. This is good news as our test day features anything but pleasant driving conditions.

2022 Subaru Forester Touring Review: Quick Take

subaru forester review specs pricing features videos and more

Recently, we held a massive 2022 AutoGuide Compact SUV Comparison test presented by NRS Brakes. We’re now going to take a closer look at one of the entries in that massive match-up, the 2022 Subaru Forester Touring.

The Forester is firmly entrenched in the status quo. Throughout the vehicle’s 25-year history, the template for Subaru’s compact SUV hasn’t changed much, including the styling. When was the last time a new-generation Forester looked completely, revolutionary different from the vehicle it replaced? The correct answer to that question is never.

Welcome to the single most important comparison we will have all year. The AutoGuide 2022 Best Small SUV Comparison sponsored by NRS Brakes.

The average family car these days isn’t even a car at all anymore. Compact SUVs are the sweet spot these days, selling thousands of examples every single day in Canada and the United States. So we’ve assembled 11 of them, from all corners of the market, to figure out which one is best. Yes, eleven. Go big or go home, they say. It’s time for AutoGuide 2022 Best Small SUV Comparison.

This group covers all the big hitters, including the segment-leading Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V. Mazda sent us two SUVs, in the shapes of the subtly different CX-5 and CX-50. More rugged options like the Ford Bronco Sport and Jeep Compass are here, too. Amongst the pack are of course a few hybrids as well. If you’re shopping this part of the market, at least a few of these SUVs will be on your short list.

2022 Subaru Forester Wilderness Review: First Drive

subaru forester review specs pricing features videos and more

Over its last few new model cycles, Subaru hasn’t exactly been extravagant with its styling changes.

With that in mind, it’s not a surprise the 2022 update to the Forester, a refresh instead of an all-new generation, has styling changes you’ll be hard-pressed to notice unless you’re a Subaru superfan or have the two parked side-by-side. Under the skin, though, are some important changes, along with Subaru adding its off-road Wilderness trim to the lineup.

For the 2022 Forester, Subaru is launching the latest version of its EyeSight active safety system. New cameras offer a front-end view nearly twice as wide as before, making it better able to detect pedestrians and cyclists as well as anything else on the road. Adaptive cruise, standard across the line, has what the automaker describes as “more natural control” that did feel smoother on the road. It’s also better able to recognize and respond to vehicles cutting you off, and while they all continue to beep at you incessantly, Subaru’s other assists like lane centering and lane departure warnings all feel much more natural.

Subaru Forester vs Chevrolet Equinox Comparison: Underdog Fight

subaru forester review specs pricing features videos and more

Nevermind sensible shoes: we’ve put our entire sensible suits on here.

Managing editor Mike Schlee and I are facing the 2022 Subaru Forester and Chevrolet Equinox. These are two of the most practical options in an eminently practical segment, the compact crossover. They both sold over 150,000 units a piece in the US last year, so they’re common sights on the road. Not the leaders—that’s less than half the number of RAV4s Toyota shifted, for example—but sometimes, you just don’t want what everyone else has, right?

That’s why we’re here. Both of these vehicles saw important upgrades for 2022, and we need to determine if that makes them more desirable than the best-sellers. The surprising truth is that it’s much harder to pick a clear victor here than we expected going into the match-up. Whether the Forester or the Equinox is the better pick for you probably depends on where you are when you’re answering.

Thanks to a shopper that’s rapidly shifting to a more outdoor-oriented lifestyle, today’s SUVs come in an increasingly wide range of flavors designed to satisfy the appetites of drivers after enhanced capability, confidence, and clearance on the road less travelled.

Most crossover SUV’s have modest off-road capabilities, and are designed primarily for use on paved surfaces. Still, a growing number of off-road capable crossover SUV’s are hitting the scene these days, with automakers using specialized models and sub-brands to set their most capable offerings apart.

Below, we’ll compare two of the latest off-road focused SUVs to hit the market.

Both have been on sale for decades and have evolved through generations of model designs. Currently, the Subaru Forester is the more senior member, with the current design having been on sale since the 2019 model year. It was refreshed this year though, and introduced a new off-road model called the Wilderness. The Hyundai Tucson is all new this year and is available in a variety of configurations and price points.

I have had two Subaru Foresters, a 2017 and a 2019, both Premium models. I mostly agree with your review and I definitely notice positive upgrades in the two models I've mentioned. Based on my most recent car the changes I wish for are as follows: 1. More horsepower and a less noisy CVT 2. Higher quality carpeting and more sound deadening in the floor to subdue road noise 3. Improvements to the infotainment system. Larger screen and more intuitive controls, as well as a more user friendly phone interface. 4. Light the steering column control stalks and the sunroof button. Also, include a "vent" function for the sunroof. 5. More and larger storage cubbies in the center console and in the doors. More soft touch materials throughout the car, less hard plastic. 6. Last, but not least, greatly improve or ditch the Start/Stop feature. I hate it. 7. Give us a horn that has some authority and doesn't sound like the Road Runner cartoon character. 8. All models should have blind spot monitoring and auto reverse braking.
