Ford Recalls 1,434 Bronco And Rangers For Lug Nuts That Aren't Tight
If you’ve got a 2023 Ford Bronco or Ranger, be careful.
Ford has issued a recall for a handful of Bronco and Ranger models, as they’re at risk of the wheels falling off. The notice affects 1,434 Bronco and Rangers; Ford says that some of the lug nuts on the driver’s side of the vehicle may not be tightened all the way. Thus that creates the potential for the wheels to just fall off completely.
Obviously, this is not good. The NHTSA says that the recall is isolated to 992 Broncos made between February 9, and February 13, 2023. It also affects 442 Ranger trucks, also made during the same time period. Basically, the automated machine that tightened the lug nuts wasn’t working correctly for that time period, resulting in nuts that might not be as tight as they should be.
Currently, there’s no stop sale, but Ford does recommend that Bronco and Ranger owners check their lug nuts before driving. The NHTSA said that one wheel separation event on a possibly affected vehicle could be traced to this recall. Ford insists that a mechanic inspect and ensure that there is no damage and that the lug nuts are within spec.
The fix is simple, with either the dealership driving the car to the service department, to ensure the lug nuts are in spec. Or a mobile mechanic will meet the customer to do the same thing. If necessary, the mechanic will repair or replace any lug nuts, lug studs, or any damaged parts.
Official recall notices will be mailed to the affected owners in May.
