Mazda CX-90 – Review, Specs, Pricing, Features, Videos and More

Earlier this spring, Mazda launched a new three-row SUV called the CX-90. A more premium, rear-wheel drive-bias family hauler, we eagerly tossed it into an eight-vehicle, three-row SUV mega comparison.

For that shootout, we had a fully loaded 2024 Mazda CX-90 3.3 Turbo S Premium Plus (called Signature in Canada). Although we regarded it as the best vehicle in the comparison, its price point was just too steep to topple the fantastic value that is the Hyundai Palisade. Ultimately, the CX-90 came up a bit short, finishing second.

Of the three versions of the 2024 Mazda CX-90, the plug-in hybrid was the one I was most curious about.

I don't need to tell you that Mazda's approach to electrification up until this point has been less than impressive. The MX-30 EV was a compliance vehicle, a novel wrapper hiding outdated tech at a punishing price. Now in rolls the CX-90, the Japanese brand's most concerted push upmarket yet, and it'll have the most complex of powertrains? Ruh-roh.

There was nothing to worry about. The 2024 Mazda CX-90 PHEV delivers on its promise of smooth power, good efficiency, and reasonable bursts of electric-only activity. It's biggest hurdle? The excellence of the standard engine.

We sent out the call. A request to every manufacturer, looking for new, significantly updated, or strong contenders in the mainstream three-row SUV segment. Quickly, manufacturers responded and entries poured in. Representing Korea are two strong options in the Kia Telluride and Hyundai Palisade. From Japan, we have the usual players, the Honda Pilot, Nissan Pathfinder, Subaru Ascent, and Toyota Highlander.

Also, there’s Mazda. The brand was eager to get the tried-and-true CX-9 in our shootout, but what they offered next was huge; both literally and figuratively. Mazda was granting us early access to the brand’s yet unreleased, all-new, CX-90 three-row SUV for this shootout. For those unfamiliar with the CX-90, it’s built on a completely new rear-wheel drive bias platform, featuring an equally new turbocharged inline-six.

A new platform and powertrain has the 2024 Mazda CX-90 rubbing shoulders with the BMW X5.

After months of teasing, Mazda on Tuesday morning revealed its new flagship, the 2024 CX-90 SUV. The CX-90 continues the brand’s march upmarket, with a new rear-drive-biased platform, powerful inline-six and plug-in hybrid powertrains, and levels of interior luxury previously unseen from the Japanese brand.

We’ve known about Mazda’s new rear-biased platform for years now. The CX-90 will be the first North American product utilizing the new architecture. Longer and wider than the existing CX-9, the CX-90 is designed for longitudinally-mounted engines. Like every other Mazda CX model, it will come with standard all-wheel drive in the US and Canada.
