With compact SUVs continuing to grow in size, a new sub-segment of vehicles has emerged that are not quite compact, but not quite subcompact. The Toyota Corolla Cross firmly fits in this new class with the likes of the Subaru Crosstrek, Honda HR-V, and Kia Seltos.

As the name implies, the Corolla Cross uses the same engine as found in the Corolla sedan. But the Cross offers all-wheel drive and a higher riding body that resembles the larger RAV4. This year a hybrid drivetrain joins the lineup for better efficiency and increased power.

Pros

Baby SUV looks, Spacious Interior, Easy to Drive

Cons

Noisy Drivetrain, Awkward Seaton Position, Engine Power

Bottom Line

The Corolla Cross is more baby SUV than Crossover, which is reflected in the way it drives and looks.

2023 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid Review: Quick Take

Vehicular oatmeal. That’s what I’ve referred to the Corolla Cross as before.

That sounds harsh, but hey, how many folks eat oatmeal for breakfast every winter morning? It’s dependable and reliable, if not a little boring.

On the face of it, the 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid is more of the same. Toyota’s hybrid systems are all about dependable and affordable efficiency, right?

2023 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid Review: First Drive

toyota corolla cross review specs pricing features videos and more

This is the 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid. Toyota’s slightly smaller SUV launched about 18 months ago, replacing the quirky C-HR with something a little more mainstream.

If anything, the Corolla Cross was too middle-of-the-road, with no real defining features in an increasingly crowded (and competitive) segment. The Hybrid changes that, as one of the few electrified options right now, improving fuel economy and power. In fact, it improves the whole driving experience—but sure enough, you’ll have to pay for the opportunity. Is it worth it? I spent a day in southern California driving it—along with the Prius Prime—to find out.

2022 Toyota Corolla Cross Second Drive Review: What’s in a Name?

toyota corolla cross review specs pricing features videos and more

The 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross is both the most and least surprising vehicle I’ve driven all year.

The not-surprising bit: Toyota has built what you see here to take on the sub-compact crossover class. It’s the fastest-growing segment in the industry, and whatever you might think of the little C-HR, it hasn’t exactly set the sales charts on fire like the RAV4. The surprising part? The company called this thing a Corolla.

Toyota has taken the world’s best-selling car nameplate and remixed it for the YouTube generation, at least according to the company’s marketing. You don’t sell 50 million of anything without building a reputation of trustworthiness and quality, and the Japanese automaker is banking on buyers seeing those same qualities in this new soft-roader.

Toyota Corolla Cross vs Honda HR-V Comparison: Heavyweight Battle of Little SUVs

toyota corolla cross review specs pricing features videos and more

Toyota and Honda’s first foray into the small compact SUV market didn’t go all that well.

The Toyota C-HR, although funky looking, was too small and lacked all-wheel drive. The original Honda HR-V was a packaging marvel with many cool features, but ultimately was too small as well. And the 1.5-liter engine didn’t cut it for that model.

Now Honda and Toyota have righted those wrongs by introducing a pair of new small compact SUVs. They’re more right sized, and full of features consumers are looking for.

The Toyota Corolla Cross was introduced for the 2022 model year, as a size smaller SUV to slot under the popular RAV4. The Honda HR-V is all-new for the 2023 model year and is larger than before, better slotting under the spacious CR-V.

2022 Toyota Corolla Cross First Drive Review: Toyota’s Oldest Model Crosses Over

Fifty million.

That’s how many Corollas have rolla’d over the surface of planet Earth, triple the number of Model Ts and double the number of Beetles. Sounds like a lot, but it’s to be expected when a vast institution like Toyota sells a hit product over the span of seven decades. But even though Toyota has built enough of these cars for every man, woman and child in Colombia (or two for every Australian) the writing is on the wall for sedans and coupes. So it’s time for the Corolla to get the big-and-tall treatment and wade into the fight with about 20 other models in the entry-level crossover segment.

Hello, Toyota Corolla Cross.

Toyota Corolla Cross vs Subaru Crosstrek Comparison: Crossfight

toyota corolla cross review specs pricing features videos and more

Round two, fight!

The Corolla Cross is a big deal for Toyota. The world’s largest automaker was missing a conventional competitor in the red-hot subcompact crossover class. So now it’s stuck its best-selling nameplate onto something to slot below the RAV4. It’s a more conventional package than the niche C-HR, with an upright shape and available AWD.

Subaru already found success in this segment with the Crosstrek. A decade ago, the company lifted its Impreza hatchback, treated it to an extra helping of black cladding, and sent it on its way with a new name. Now the Crosstrek is one of the sales juggernauts, the only subcompact SUV to sell over 100,000 units in the US each of the last two years.

When we last pitched the new Toyota against a competitor, the Kia Seltos, both cars were in their respective top trims. The newcomer lost, so this time around we’re looking at the mid-level options. Read on to see if the Corolla Cross can redeem itself.

Toyota Corolla Cross vs Kia Seltos Comparison

toyota corolla cross review specs pricing features videos and more

The sub-compact crossover segment is the fastest-growing in North America.

Everyone wants a piece of the pie, like the four-wheeled equivalent of the gold rush 170 years ago. As supposedly “compact” crossovers become larger than grampa’s Buick, the class below has room to grow, in both dimension and sales figures. The 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross is a shining example: this new model is almost 10 inches longer than big brother RAV4 was in 2005. Similarly, Kia has the Seltos, which showed up on the scene last year. It’s less than an inch bigger than a Sportage of the same vintage.

Nobody would have accused either of those older models of being too small. So are the Corolla Cross and Seltos all the car most people need? And has either one of these manufacturers struck gold? We spent a week with them both to find out.

Toyota Corolla Cross vs Mazda CX-30: Which Small SUV Is Right For You?

toyota corolla cross review specs pricing features videos and more

It’s the era of the utility vehicle, and the market for small SUVs seems to be particularly hot right now as more and more North American new car buyers move away from sedans.

There appears to be almost a never-ending stream of brand new or completely redesigned models arriving all the time, and in the midst of all this, Toyota has just brought out the Corolla Cross. Slotting below the ever-popular RAV4 in the lineup, the Toyota Corolla Cross is a budget-conscious compact crossover with a solid powertrain, excellent fuel economy, and plenty of thoughtful standard equipment.

The size and price point make the Corolla Cross a practical competitor to the likes of the Mazda CX-30 – Mazda’s current semi-premium small compact SUV in the North American market. But how do the two really compare? Is the CX-30’s extra horsepower and stunning good looks enough to steal the Corolla Cross’s thunder? Or is the Toyota such a thoughtful, efficient family hauler that it stands on its own? It’s the Toyota Corolla Cross vs Mazda CX-30.

toyota corolla cross review specs pricing features videos and more

The past several years has seen a veritable explosion in the number of handsome, practical, small-but-full-featured crossover utility vehicles on the market.

It’s no longer the case that you must shell out the big bucks for the biggest, most opulent, most top-of-the-line SUV in the lineup to get the good stuff. These days, even the least-expensive utility vehicles typically offer premium audio, mobile phone connectivity, and loads of active safety equipment.

Brand new for 2022 in the North American market, these two compact five-door crossovers are loaded with multimedia goodies, active driver assists, and more space and practicality than its diminutive footprint might lead you to believe. Toyota Corolla Cross vs Jeep Compass: Which Small SUV Is Right For You?

toyota corolla cross review specs pricing features videos and more

It seems like every day, the compact crossover segment grows just a bit more crowded and contested, with brand new contenders appearing all the time.

Recently, Toyota doubled up on its compact utility vehicle offerings with the introduction of the Corolla Cross – a relatively inexpensive small crossover that slots in beneath the RAV4, offering shoppers a more budget-friendly but still well-equipped option.

The size and starting price of the Corolla Cross make it a palatable alternative to the likes of more established compact CUVs – like the Jeep Compass, for instance. The Compass was itself just refreshed for the 2022 model year, with a revamped interior, new standard technologies, and a retooled trim lineup. So how do the two compare? Let’s find out in a battle of the Toyota Corolla Cross vs Jeep Compass

Toyota Corolla Cross vs. Honda HR-V: Which Small SUV Is Right For You?

toyota corolla cross review specs pricing features videos and more

As competition in the small SUV market continues to heat up, Toyota has made a major play to try and capture the attention of younger buyers with the new-for-2022 Toyota Corolla Cross.

A more budget-friendly compact alternative to Toyota’s popular RAV4, the Corolla Cross is no less handsome or well put-together, but it starts several grand below the RAV4, making it a much more palatable option for those with less disposable income.

Of course, the Corolla Cross has entered a rather crowded market, which already hosts numerous compact SUV models from the likes of Ford, GM, Jeep, Subaru, Volkswagen, and more. Among all these is the Honda HR-V – a small utility vehicle from one of Japan’s most beloved manufacturers, which has been on the market longer and carries a lower price tag. Just how well does Toyota’s new Corolla Cross stack up against Honda’s well-regarded HR-V? Let’s take a look.
