2022 Ford Bronco Sport Badlands Review: Quick Take

ford bronco sport review specs pricing features videos and more

Recently, we held a massive 2022 AutoGuide Compact SUV Comparison test presented by NRS Brakes. We’re now going to take a closer look at one of the entries in that battle royale, the 2022 Ford Bronco Sport.

The Bronco Sport is the perfect illustration of the flexibility in this class. Slightly smaller than the Escape with which it shares its platform, the BroSpo is a boxier, more rugged entry in the compact SUV segment. Ironically, it reverses course for car-bases SUVs, offering some of the compromises of old-school SUVs, with an extra dash of cool.

The Bronco Sport sauntered into its second model year with minimal changes. There were a handful of new exterior paint choices and slight price increases, but otherwise it’s the same little cute-ute we liked when it launched in 2021. Next year sees a nostalgia-tinged Heritage Edition launch in bright colors with white grilles, too.

Welcome to the single most important comparison we will have all year. The AutoGuide 2022 Best Small SUV Comparison sponsored by NRS Brakes.

The average family car these days isn’t even a car at all anymore. Compact SUVs are the sweet spot these days, selling thousands of examples every single day in Canada and the United States. So we’ve assembled 11 of them, from all corners of the market, to figure out which one is best. Yes, eleven. Go big or go home, they say. It’s time for AutoGuide 2022 Best Small SUV Comparison.

This group covers all the big hitters, including the segment-leading Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V. Mazda sent us two SUVs, in the shapes of the subtly different CX-5 and CX-50. More rugged options like the Ford Bronco Sport and Jeep Compass are here, too. Amongst the pack are of course a few hybrids as well. If you’re shopping this part of the market, at least a few of these SUVs will be on your short list.

2021 Ford Bronco Sport 1.5T Review: Friendly Mall Crawler

ford bronco sport review specs pricing features videos and more

We’re big fans of the little Bronco Sport here at AutoGuide.

How could we not be? Ford’s pint-sized crossover jams in a whole bunch of attitude into a right-sized package. When yours truly said the BroSpo “proves a sub-compact crossover can be equal parts cute and ute,” I meant it.

Thing is, that was the top-level Badlands trim. The one with the bigger engine, fancier torque-vectoring AWD system, and pretty much every box ticked. Range-toppers are excellent illustrations of what a car is capable of, but they aren’t always representative of the volume sellers. With that in mind, I recently spent a week with a 2021 Ford Bronco Sport Big Bend, a more down-to-Earth version of Ford’s baby Bronco. This is clearly a model geared more towards how most people actually use their crossovers—on the road, not off—so does it retain the magic?

Ford Bronco Sport vs Subaru Outback Wilderness Comparison

ford bronco sport review specs pricing features videos and more

Both of these ruggedized crossovers have a reputation to uphold.

The Ford Bronco Sport is the fresher face of the pair, showing up for the 2021 model year. It makes it intentions clear the moment you clock those six white letters on the grille. Son of Bronco means more off-road prowess than other sub-compact SUVs, but with an added layer of refinement that the full-size model does without.

In the other corner is the Subaru Outback, the de facto flagship for the Japanese brand. When you hear the brand name, chances are you see an Outback in your mind—that, or a bright blue rally car. The Outback predicted the market’s shift towards crossovers, starting out as a trim level for the Legacy (and Impreza). Now, it’s the only way to get a Legacy wagon, and it doesn’t even use that name anymore. The Outback still sets the tone for go-anywhere family wagons, and the new-for-2022 Wilderness adds to its off-road appeal. More ride height, chunkier tires, reinforced roof rails—a lot of what you see here is stuff owners were already doing, but now they can get it all straight from the source.

2021 Ford Bronco Sport Review: Full of Bucking Character

ford bronco sport review specs pricing features videos and more

It’s after the tenth or so explanation that this is not the new Ford Bronco that I start saying sorry before the spiel.

The vehicle that multiple people have stopped to ask me about during the week is a new Ford Bronco—just not the new Ford Bronco. The Sport is the softer, friendlier little brother, I tell them, a sub- Escape crossover with a generous sprinkling of off-road ability. The full-fat Bronco experience arrives this summer, to battle the Jeep Wrangler. My near-Pavlovian response is starting to sound too rehearsed; thus, the apologies.

The 2021 Ford Bronco Sport is unapologetic about what it is, however. Ford could have phoned this one in, slapping a Bronco name on a nondescript smaller crossover and laughing all the way to the bank. Instead, the Blue Oval has crafted a very likeable little trucklet, brimming with personality and practicality.

Ford Bronco Sport vs Mazda CX-50: Which Rugged Compact SUV is Right for You?

ford bronco sport review specs pricing features videos and more

Today’s driver tends to prefer a SUV for a variety of reasons. Car-like handling characteristics and maneuverability, an elevated driving position, all-weather traction from widely-available All-Wheel Drive (AWD), flexibility and space that’s easy to appreciate for growing families.

Below, we’ll compare two newcomers to the market: the new-for-2023 Mazda CX-50, and the 2022 Ford Bronco Sport—now in its second model year after debuting in 2021.

The Mazda CX-50 is an all-new model running the brand’s latest AWD technology, as well as a variety of feature and equipment touches that aim it towards shoppers active in an outdoor, off-road setting.

The Ford Bronco Sport targets a similar shopper after a traditional crossover driving experience with elevated off-road capability that’s ready when required.

Ford Bronco Sport vs Jeep Cherokee: Which SUV is Right for You?

ford bronco sport review specs pricing features videos and more

They might compete in two different segments, but the Ford Bronco Sport and Jeep Cherokee have similar mission statements.

What we’re looking at here is the likely volume leader of the new Bronco family. As cool as the new Bronco is—very, and you should read our in-depth launch article about it—the realities of the current market suggest the Bronco Sport will sell in larger numbers. It’s the more everyday-friendly package, while still offering increased off-road prowess over anything else in the sub-compact class. In that way, it’s arguably more of a unique entry in the landscape.
