Alfa Romeo 4C Likely Getting a Backup Camera

As of May 1, 2018, all new cars are required to come standard with a backup camera.

That left us wondering what would happen to the Alfa Romeo 4C. The 2,300-lb sports car doesn’t come with a display screen and doesn’t have a backup camera, so Fiat Chrysler can either choose to update the car with a screen and camera, or kill it off.

We reached out to Alfa Romeo for comment on the future of the 4C, and it sounds as though FCA will instead choose to update the sports car.

“We haven’t announced any plans to stop production of the Alfa Romeo 4C and, as always, we will make sure all of our vehicles comply with all regulatory requirements,” an Alfa Romeo spokesperson said in a statement.

The quote isn’t completely telling, but it does seem as though Alfa Romeo is leaning toward updating the 4C with a backup camera. Additionally, a report from 2017 indicated the vehicle would receive a heavy update for 2019 that would include updated suspension and steering, and perhaps an updated engine as well.

Alfa Romeo lead engineer Roberto Fedeli was previously quoted in saying that Alfa Romeo was “coming back to Formula 1,” and that it needs the 4C to serve as a “halo car,” to coincide with the sponsorship. The Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 team is off to a good start in 2018, so this would seem like a poor time to kill off the most performance-focused car in its lineup.

The 2019 model year Alfa Romeo 4C is rumored to debut sometime this fall. It may appear before then, however, with Alfa Romeo said to be planning a large, multi-model media unveiling event this June at FCA’s Balocco test track in Italy.
