For decades the BMW 3 Series has been the standard of the compact luxury sedan world. With the latest model, this still appears to the case. The performance, comfort, luxury, and enjoyment is unmatched by most competitors.
Currently, a choice of turbocharged four-cylinder and six-cylinder engines are available as well as a hybrid set-up.
Pros | Fun to drive, well designed interior, High-tech features |
Cons | Not exactly pretty, More “sedan” than “sport”, Some features are a bit gimmicky |
Bottom Line | The BMW 3 Series is among the best in its class, with excellent engines and fun-to-drive dynamics. The design is a bit conservative, but a fully loaded 3 Series is an impressive vehicle. |
2023 BMW M340i xDrive Review
I know what the M in M340i stands for, but I propose a new meaning: “measuring stick.”
That’s what the 2023 BMW M340i xDrive is in the compact luxury sedan segment, after all. For decades, the 3 Series has been the car against which all other competitors are judged. Sure, there was a slight wobble with the previous, F30 generation, but this latest G20 was a return to form. And, if anything, the market’s ongoing love affair with the SUV has put the merits of the sport sedan into sharper focus.
For 2023, BMW has treated its vaunted four-door to a round of updates. Do they keep the M340i ahead of the pack? I spent a week with a Skyscraper Grey Metallic model with xDrive to find out.
2023 BMW 3 Series Review: First Drive
All over its lineup, BMW is making big decisions that’s getting some big pushback.
Controversial large grilles, increased electrification, less-serious M-series models, and as BMW decides to build the first stand-alone M model in decades, it’s a large SUV.
The 3 Series, though, is more traditional. More set in its ways. The original sports sedan still has small grilles (other than the M3) and is still very much like the generations of 3 that came before. So it’s not much of a surprise that the refresh for the 2023 BMW 3 Series is not ground-shaking. Instead, it’s quite subtle, but more than enough to keep this car ultra-competitive in its segment.
