Both 2024 models are built on the same MQB (modular transverse matrix) chassis architecture as the outgoing cars, but the big mechanical changes taking place under the hood. The two engines previously offered (3.6-liter V6 and 2.0-liter 4-cylinder) are being replaced with one. The new engine is Volkswagen’s fourth generation EA888 2.0-liter direct-injection turbocharged 4-cylinder that produces 269 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque.
The powerplant pairs with an 8-speed automatic transmission and Volkswagen’s 4MOTION all-wheel drive, with the latter being standard across the model range for both cars. For reference, the outgoing V6 (VR6) produced 276 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque. Towing capacity with the new engine remains unchanged at 5,000 pounds.
New Year, New Look
On the design front, both models receive new front end styling featuring a wide chrome, four-bar grille with new LED headlights and standard Adaptive Front-lighting System. Additionally, on all grades above the base model, the daytime running lights connect with a lightbar that runs the length of the grille and sits above an illuminated Volkswagen logo.
New front fascias with integrated air intakes are also new on both cars, with Cross Sport models receiving gloss black grille trim and a gloss black “X” that stretches across the lower fascia, similar to the one on the compact Taos crossover.
At the rear, both models receive larger spoilers that lengthen the overall roofline. An illuminated lightbar and Volkswagen logo is standard on all models above the base grades, and the Cross Sport gets a more aggressive rear diffuser.
New wheel designs for all trims on both cars is also on tap, which range in size from 18 to 20 inches. Machined alloy and black finishes are available, with R-Line trims receiving 21-inch aluminum alloys. R-Lines also receive a gloss black grille and badging.
Big Upgrades, Big Screens
Among the biggest changes for the 2024 Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport are in their respective cabins, which receive a host of premium materials and finishes. This includes a leatherette-trimmed dashboard and centre console, new front door trim décor that flows into the dash – a feature that’a also present in the second row.
Other cabin enhancements include available ambient lighting in 30 colors, backlit dash décor trim with the model name, and quilted leather seating with diamond stitch pattern on top trims. Elsewhere, all models now come with a standard heated steering wheel with paddle shifters, Climatronic automatic climate control, and Voice Control. The centre console is also new to include a underneath storage compartment. Volkswagen is also moving available leather seating and heated rear seats down one trim level than outgoing models.
On the tech front, both models receive a broader offering, with features such as a new 12-inch infotainment display, and a configurable 10.25-inch Volkswagen Digital Cockpit Pro instrument cluster, which is standard across the model range. Wireless App-Connect, wireless charging and six USB-C ports (eight are available) and 45-watt fast charging are also standard on all models.
And on the Safety Front
All 2024 Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport also come standard with Volkswagen’s IQ.DRIVE driver assistance technology. This partially autonomous suite of aids includes lane centering and a capacitive steering wheel designed provide steering assist, along with alerts for oncoming obstacles. Head-up display and adaptive cruise control are also available.
