2023 Volkswagen ID.4 Will Have A Cheaper Option With a Smaller Battery
The 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 will appeal to more buyers, with a new, smaller battery option.
Details are scares, but Volkswagen has confirmed to multiple outlets that the 2023 VW ID.4 will come with a smaller battery, rated at 62 kWh, for the 2023 model year. This battery pack isn’t quite new, European markets have had the smaller battery as a low-cost entry since the model’s introduction. By comparison, all 2021 and 2022 US and Canadian ID.4’s use an 82 kWh battery, good for about 245 to 275 depending if the crossover is all-wheel-drive or not.
VW is hush-hush on pricing, but we think the smaller battery ID.4 could slip under the $30,000 mark, putting it square in the sights of the Chevy Bolt EUV. Most notably, the 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 will be built at VW’s Chattanooga, Tennessee plant, marking the start of Volkswagen’s huge EV manufacturing push. We do know that the Chattanooga plant will manufacture all variants of the ID.4, including the smaller battery variant.
We aren’t sure what the range of the smaller variant is, but given the standard ID4’s somewhat middling efficiency, the smaller battery could deliver a range of slightly under 200 miles. Also, some sources claim that a slightly revised interior could be in the works, too. Does that mean VW’s rightfully derided touchscreen infotainment will be scrapped? Probably not, but all we can do is dream, right?
Expect more information on the 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 to be released within the next few weeks.
