The 2020 Land Rover Defender will be sold in the United States and Canada, the British automaker has announced.

The next-generation Defender, which will debut in 2019 before going on sale in the US and Canada in early 2020, is said to have “broader public appeal,” than the utilitarian first-generation Defender. The automaker says it will have “an all-new exterior and interior design, as well as a suite of the latest driver assistance and connectivity features available.”

“When it debuts in 2019, the new model will represent 70 years of innovation and improvement in just one model year; honoring the model’s history for rugged durability, while thoroughly remaining a Defender for the 21st century,” Land Rover added.

North American models will likely be powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder gas engine and will aim for segment-leading off-road capability.

Land Rover is currently putting the 2020 Defender through a brutal pre-production testing regime that will expose it to all sorts of brutal conditions, from frigid Sweden to the scorching American desert. It says the tests will help “to make sure the new Defender is the most off-road capable Land Rover vehicle ever.”

Full details on the 2020 Defender will become available following its debut next year, so stay tuned as more information on the SUV comes to light.
